If I Only Had A Brain

I could think of things I never thunk before
And then I'd sit and think some more

I have the honor of being chosen by none other than the Bad Bhudda himself as being one of 5 blogs that makes him think. This seems a rather ill deserved honor when you consider that my recent posts have involved endlessly fascinating natterings about my dogs qualifying for agility nationals, an afternoon spent sitting around a lake in the mountains and my Adam Ant earworm. My next post was going to be about my exciting discovery of the 'reverse baton exchange' in the USDAA Team Pairs Relay event and my attempts at trying to make a chocolate milkshake but instead the mighty Bhudda has asked me to list 5 blogs that make me think.

Unfortunately I can't seem to do it. I've only got 10 blogs listed on my sidebar and to pick 5 of them would perhaps imply that the other 5 don't make me think and I don't want to hurt any feelings here. All of those blogs I have listed get me thinking to some extent or another in different sorts of ways and ranking them seems too difficult a task for this bear of little brain.

I will say this little exercise does have me thinking about my subject matter lately. Maybe I've had a little too much self indulgent rambling about the dogs' agility results though maybe that's just because I've been immersed in agility for the past 3 days. I keep thinking of a scene from the Simpsons where Homer is banging his fist on the top of the TV while yelling 'Be More Funny'. Maybe I should start banging my fist on the computer while yelling 'Be More Thought Provoking.'

Hey Elayne, as I mentioned on my blog, you're shortchanging this place! DOSASTM, aside from being the best blog title ever, is (I'm pretty sure) the only punk running/dog agility blog on the Internet. It's opinionated and entertaining. Every so often, it deals with deeper stuff in an honest and refreshingly unsentimental way. And it has great photos of dogs and stuff.

    It's just a kickass blog.

  4. Character, yes, well that's one word for it.

  5. I love reading your blog because sometimes I learn things and because you often make me laugh (like today's title/photo and your closing line). And it reminds me that I should concentrate more in my blog on making *myself* laugh. And then I forget again and get boring again.

But, ya know what, that's the point--I blog for ME and not for someone else, even if it is the Big Bad Bhudda. I've recently been reading some posts on MySpace (because I know a couple of people there), and it's a constant barrage of people challenging each other to write more to some predefined specification, and it's all about getting readership. I mean, when you post a comment, you can also mark how high a rating (0, 1, or 2 "kudos") you give the post! Jeepers criminy creepers!

I keep coming back to why I started the blog: As a diary for my very own self to help keep track of my thoughts, experiences, emotions, hopes, dreams, failures, and successes with my dogs. Anything else is moot. If someone wants me to write on a specific topic, they can pay me. I do that enough in my regular job, thanks very much.

So *my* suggestion fwiw is: write when you want to about what you want to. That includes whether you choose to write about other blogs or bloggers and what you choose to say. As long as you give Taj MuttHall 2 kudos.

Absolutely, that's what I've always done and what I'll continue to do. But at some point I have to acknowledege that people are taking time out of their busy day to read what I have to say and if it's constantly of interest only to me then why not just keep a private journal?

On the other hand I'm not too concerned with drumming up a huge audience, in fact too many strangers intruding on my life would be creepy. I can't possibly tell what will or won't be of interest so most of the time I just write about whatever.

I got suckered into watching some guy's video blog on youtube because he had a cool video of his frisbee dogs but he started in on some weird campaign to get people to comment on and rate his videos so he could get rated one of the most popular blogs, or something, I couldn't quite understand the point or why it mattered so much to him but it was annoying as hell. He started saying mildly inflammatory things to try to generate controversy & discussion. It reminds me of bands that yell at the crowd to start dancing during their set and how much that annoys me.
